Loke's Trickster: The shiny black crowberry, or empetrum nigrum, contains ample amounts of fluids, and used to be an important source of nutrition. The berry grows all over the Faeroe islands, where the king Sverre Sigurdsson grew up. In 1186, Sverre challenged German merchants visiting Bergen to make crowberry wine, to replace imported ones. Because wine made from grapes was so expensive, Norwegian priests requested permission from the Pope to use crowberries for their altar wine instead of grapes, but the Pope refused them.

Tyr's Warrior: Lingonberry is a small, evergreen plant with leathery leaves and red berries. Its latin name, vaccinium vitis-idaea, can be translated to “wine from the mountain”. The berry has been foraged and used for thousands of years in the north. For example, a 3000-year old lingonberry wine was found in a viking grave in Denmark. The lingonberry plant was, like many others, used for medicinal purposes. The berry contains organic acids, like benzoic- and salicylic acid, vitamin C, A, B (B1, B2, B3), calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. Not only that, but the berry also contains photochemicals which are said to aid with urinary tract unfections. The lingonberry is well-regarded, and Christians often thought the cross-shaped remnants of the plant’s flower resembled the crucifix.

Balder's Blue Eyes: The blueberry is one of Norway’s most common wild plants, and can be found in almost every corner of the nation. It mostly grows in birch and pine forests, and also in areas where other plants do not survive because of low nutrition in the ground. Blueberry is incredibly popular as an ingredient in juice, jam, and many, many dishes. Scientists have discovered the blueberry contains a  lot of antioxidants, in addition to vitamin C, tannin, glycolic acid, flavonoids, carotene, iron, and magnesium. Blueberry was commonly used to help with digestion, and its decoction used to treat inflammations in the mouth or throat.

Freya's Bliss: Cloudberry, rubus chamaemorus, is also known as the gold of the plateau. Ever since ancient times, the cloudberry has been considered the finest of wild berries. Even though the plant is very common north of the polar circle, it doesn’t bear fruit very often outside of Scandinavia. The berries help combat digestive infections and was used in olden days to soothe inflammations and infected wounds, most notably by the Sami. Research has shown cloudberries contain a lot of antioxidants that offer protection against cancer and cardiovascular disease, and could even help reduce the effects of aging.

Eir's Healing Hands: Our angelica soap is named after the goddess Eir, goddess of the healing arts. This is no coincidence, because the medicinal qualities of angelica are amazing to say the least. It is said angelica has the following properties: appetizing, beneficial to stomach acid, expectorant, soothing cramps, warming, good for nerves, diuretic, antipyretic, blood-cleansing, disinfectant, antibacterial, and anti-fungal. Even anorexia and roundworms!

Thor's Battle: The juniper is a plant of myth and legend, the shape of its triangular pine cone bearing similarities to the symbol of Thor; his mighty hammer. Juniper incense warded against evil spirits and powers. Both berries and spruce contain essential oils. Juniper also contain flavonglycosides, tannin, resin, organic acids, sugar, and vitamin C. Juniperus communis is one of four species of berry tree found in Norway, and is common all over the country. The juniper tree is wintergreen, and has a pleasant smell. Its berries, which are actually the tree’s pine cones, spend two years to ripen, being a light green for the first year but turn black as they grow ripe during the second.
